This might be a dumb question, but I figured I would ask.
I was actually thinking about this again, and if you reinforce the sheet metal on the hatch itself (maybe steel plate the inside), the only real custom work left is the hatch gas strut supports, which in all actuality, you can either fab up a doubler plate to use 2 on each side, or you could replace them with hydraulic actuators on a power switch mounted up front in the dash (or you can get all pimp and put it on a remote too).

Default Bonarue II Tire carrier

Dude, I've been looking for the hitch tire carrier as well. Here is a link I found after vigorous searching. I don't think they make this product anymore. I've tried several websites and phone numbers, but no luck.

http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/zj/bonarue/tirerack.htm

This was the episode on Truck U with the product.

Hope this helps!

just wondering, i am in the process of modifying a tire rack i got off of a pathfinder for 35 bucks at a u pull it, and it is going to be mounted to my aftermarket bumper... Strength is not a problem, this is very stout, but why dont you make a swing away tire holder, and when you need inside the back the tire rack will pivot out of the way and you can open up the hatch?

Baba Boooooooooooeeeeyyyy! You are correct Seed!

Kamokid, nice job on the rebuild! As for the tire mount, I have the whole setup, including the door mount, just not sure if I wanna ruin my hatch by putting holes in it and possibly twisting my stock bumper at the same time. After going through this feed, I'm actually considering the Detours tailbone tire carrier. Looks sturdy, can hold oversized tires and way cheaper than any other tire carrier I've found.
