Question SO confused!!!!!!

Hi everyone! I am new to this site, but very happy I found it!!

I have a 95 cherokee country. I plugged in a cell phone charger to the lighter, then it broke in the lighter. When that happend, the cd player stopped working. Like it was getting no power. It gave me the cd when I hit eject though. I bought and installed a new cd player and am having the same problem and the lighter doesn't work now either, which tells me it was not the cd player.

I bought the jeep used two years ago, and have had no problems so I never noticed I did not have an owner's manual for it, because I didn't need it. I now think that it is a fuse problem, but I don't know where to begin!!!

Check the fuse panel under the dash near the steering column for any blown fuses

after checking the fuses, use a mulitmeter on the power wire to the radio. if that has power when the key is turned to accsesory, check the constant power with the key off (used to keep presets, ect) that could very likely be linked to the cig lighter. the charger probably shorted that relay out. replace the blown fuse first because that is the easiest to do.

my '92 doesnt have a fuse cover, but the panel says what the fuses are if you stand on your head and balance a flashlight.

I thank you all so much!!!!! I really LOVE my jeep so much I bought 2, a cherokee and a grand cherokee. They were always my dreamcars, but I was getting very frustrated!!!!!

I wonder though, if the relay is shorted out, the cd player would get no power at all right? It did give me back my cd when I hit the eject button, would it still do that?

Welcome from Tennessee!! I'm not familiar with the Cherokee as we have 2 of the Grands. After pulling the fuse, can you take the console apart and or remove/replace the damaged charger from the lighter socket? If you can't find the correct fuse, pull bat. cable while fixing problem. JMO

Your Radio/CD has 2 hot wires feeding it.

Yes, I removed the charger, and all of its pieces!!!!! LOL! I just need to figure out how to get the cd player working again. My lighter is not working either now. Whatever I blew must run both of those things, I hope!!

I really am amazed and so grateful for the FAST responses on this site! And it is nice to know there is a site just for jeeps! I knew there was a reason I loved jeeps!!!!

Thanks again to all who have responded, and thanks ahead of time to all who may respond! All suggestions are appriciated!!!

Ok, so even if I did short it out, it could still eject. Are they both on the same fuse?

You didn't hurt it. It feeds off of 2 separate fuses. You might have lost your brake lights though!!! My Grands have 2 lighter/charger sockets in front. Only 1 charges' with key off. Which type is yours'? You might also check the "Power Distribution Center" box under the hood. It's a black plastic box about 3"x10", with the hinge on the long side, and contains relays, circuit breakers, and some fuses. It's labeled inside the lid as to what each cavity is.

You are so helpful, Thanks!! I just want to add that I was just out in the jeep and I noticed that the lighter is lit up, and the cd player has a red light that blinks when the face is removed and it is blinking.

The charger was not factory installed in the jeep, it was a removeable one that plugs into the lighter. I never even thought to look under the hood!!
