Unhappy Smog test fail

Those are three four letter words you don't want to here. I live in California and failed the test, two of the five times I tried. The two last tests were successful in the fact that I was able to get numbers, the other three times ,well bad luck, first attempt aborted because of over heated motor, second try tps failed right as I got there ,third time don't ask
As far as the numbers are I would like to ask for help my numbers are very high the HC is 148@ 15 mph ,145@25 mph ,CO .65@15mph,.71@ 25 mph the NO is 1716@15 mph and 1403 @25 mph
I have done a complete tune up plug, wires, cap, rotor, oil & filter change ,the yet is working as well as everything else
My next step is seafoam, and 703 injectors
The smog place said I was rich and lean.that the cat seemed to be working as was the O2 sensor.Dose any one think they can help lower my numbers? Thank-you

Is this a, one time for registration, (not in a smog control district), or a bi-annual or yearly test? If it's a one time, I've heard of puting in a new cat converter and testing immediately after. I got nothing. Find why it's overheating, might be related, vacuum leaks?

Your numbers really aren't that high. It would be helpful if you included the max limits too, so we can see just how far off you are.

Obviously you have to do it in ASM "loaded mode," dyno and all.

he said rich and lean? did he explain what he meant by that?

you changed your plugs, it could be as simple as that - what did you put in?

Look on the underhood label - it tells you the correct plugs to use, and the gap. Using other than those plugs will almost guaranty it won't pass. No matter what the kid at the parts house says! If no label, use standard old fashioned Champions. The "trick plugs" - yellows, blues, splits, plats, multi's or all Bosch will only cause problems.

Next test - make sure the gas is less than a week old since you filled it - and add 1 pint of DENATURED ALCOHOL to the full tank. -it's the same stuff as the "garanteed to pass".
Seafoam does not burn (test it with a match,) but it will raise emissions - avoid it.

let us know.

It's a bi-annual test, and the plugs are good old championsthe test place said try seafoam for carbon buildup, and maybe look at the injectors.
The limits are HC 124@15 &104@25, the CO limit is .75@15 &.95@25 the NO limit is 714@15 &616@25 this is for an 88

Looks like the biggest problem is with NOx. Check your base timing if adjustable. Set it 2 degrees retarded from initial timing spec.
Remove and clean out the EGR Valve passages - in the manifold and the valve itself. And check to make sure the vacuum to it is strong at 2000 RPM or so.

It's not really rich (CO) but it does show an ignition misfire (HC). Drive it a few miles with the DENATURED ALCOHOL in it, that should burn off any excess carbon it may have.

You might also try opening the plug gaps slightly - for a longer spark - open another .005 - not more than that.

I don't think the timing is adjustable ,the EGR valve is working I did take it off and clean everything after the first fail it lowered the NO by about 400 ppm on both speed tests. I do think I have a slight miss like you said after listening to it again. I am willing to try the plug gap and alcohol ,any ideas on the miss? Thanks a bunch

A miss?

Not the safest test, but easy. Short little shots of quick start around the intake manifold and hoses will revile a vacuum leak if the rpm changes.

With the engine cold, check the tightness of your intake manifold bolts/nuts. A slight leak there could cause a miss and screw with the O2 sensor readings.

Why do that when you live in Oklahoma?

But it is no big deal really. When you think about it, it is just something to make your engine run well like it is supposed to. Conversions can be a bit of a pain though.

Sounds like you got a lazy O2 sensor. I had a similar problem with my 89 when I had it. Slapped an O2 in it and it fixed it.

Ok everything so far sounds really helpful one question I have is when I replace some of these things do I need to reset the computer? Or is the Rinex system different .

x2 on the o2 sensor being the culprit.

If not, you may just need a new CAT. When i first got mine it failed emissions MISERABLY because there was nothing left inside. Yours doesn't sound that bad but the point is they do wear out.
