sometime I notice a gas smell outside of the xj toward the back... I've looked for leaks at the fuel tank with no luck.. Is this typical?? I mean its not really bad but is noticable..

I have been filling my tank back up every time it gets to 3/4 of a tank...

and I have no Cat (was that out loud?)

 

gas cap venting?

 

Check the hoses that go from the gas tank vents to the charcoal canister. those hoses tend to go bad and leak gas fumes.

On top of the tank theres also vapor lines with roll over valves inserted in grommets. On my 94 I had to drop the armor to see, there was like a sweat stain in the dust. A cracked grommet was letting a little gas leak out when the tank was over 1/2 full.

 

i looked under it the other day and noticed the dampness under the cover.. I'll have to take that apart and see whats up.. I'm going to let it get to half a tank and see that makes any difference...

 

Let us know what you find. I sometimes notice a slight gas smell after getting out, but only right as I get out, and only if I'm in the enclosed space of my garage.

I have a new longblock, along with rebuilt neon 4-hole injectors. I never really notice the gas smell toward the front or under the hood. But on the driver's side near the doors its like you walk through a small cloud of raw gas vapor for just a second.
