Stock XJ Cherokee Tech. All XJ Non-modified/stock questions go hereXJ (84-01)
All OEM related XJ specific tech. Examples, no start, general maintenance or anything that's stock.
My 98 lives in an underground garage with overhead sprinkler pipes that severely compromise the height.
Looking for a lift that will give me no more than about 2 inches.
I see in previous posts that stock-ish height Bilsteins give the best ride but they don't seem to be available anymore.
Use of XJ is mostly street, dirt/gravel roads and some soft-roading with some snow driving to Vermont/Maine/Canada in the winter. Not going to be doing any long distance or heavy towing.
Primarily looking for comfort and would like to at least get a 30 inch tire on stock rims in there without rubbing. I plan on keeping this XJ for a long time so I don't mind spending whatever it takes to get the right stuff as long as it doesn't involve cutting my fenders or wheel liners.
Anybody have experience with something that might work for me?
You do know that adding Bilsteins alone will do nothing for your lift height, right? Also pretty sure they're still available...contact them directly with your specs, or go to their website for the correct part numbers, their product list is extensive and extremely thorough.
I'd be careful about adding anything that lifts your vehicle however, with the limited headspace...would really suck to discover some pipes are lower than others, lol
Thanks for the reply.
I understand that the shocks won't increase height but I'd need to get the correct shock length to go with whatever changed springs/spacers I get.
The garage is small enough that I know that adding 2 inches of height and an inch in tire radius won't be a problem with the ceiling height.
Rusty’s 2” lift front springs. Crown HD leafs (get bushings, the leafs are sold without) and Iron Rock Offroad adjustable “boomerang” shackles. This will get you the lift you want.
"Primarily looking for comfort and would like to at least get a 30 inch tire on stock rims in there without rubbing."
Due to it's increased width a 30x15" tire when using stock rims will likely hit the lower control arms at near full turn.

I havent modified anything so i dont have that issue. But one may be able to lessen the rub by adjusting the steering stops on the backside of the knuckles. Turning radius wont be quite as sharp. Those stops are just threaded into the knuckle with a nut tack welded to it.
You could always replace that stop with a longer bolt. I dont know what the threads are tho. Might help, might not. But its an option.
What i dont know is how close the tire would be at full flex in relation to the fenders.
