Default Best tire size for stock AND when I lift it? Good for both

Yes another best tire thread, but I am looking for the best bang for buck tire and size for an XJ that will get new tires before a 3 inch lift. I don't want to wait and do both together, I don't have the money so I'm going to get tires, cut fenders and when I get the cash for the lift, use the same tires. This is going to be a DD

3" lift with 31" tires seems to be a favorite. Good overall height and ground clearance, with fewer parts needed to make it a reliable DD.

I personally think 3" with 31s AND cut fenders is over kill for a DD. If you can, wait and do it all together, or get the lift first. Word of advice, get the full leaf packs, not only will they not sag as quickly, but the will ride much better than an add a leaf. I'm running and add a leaf now and man its a bumpy ride, compared to my buddies XJ with new leaf springs. We are both running rough country lifts.

Well I'm not going to be able to run 31s on stock ride height and I'm not going to be able to run stock tires with a 3 inch without it looking ridiculous

235/75's would work both ways. You could run 31's without the fender flares on and just put them back when you lift it.

Why not? If you remove your fender flares 31's will fit fine. And after you lift it you can always put the fender flares back on if you like.

^beat me to it haha

I was thinking the wheel well gap and tire fill would be too large after you lift it on 31's, but its being said you can fit the 31s which would be a break for you.

I had 31s on a stocker with flares and it ran fine. It rubbed the control arms a lil but was ok other than that.

Guess it depends on what lift the OP ends up with. I ran 235's with the RE 3.5" SF kit and it looked pretty bad in my opinion.

Another thing to bring up is what year xj the OP has. The wheel wells on 96 and older xj's were slightly larger and people have had luck running 31's with no lift and no trimming. If the OP has a 97+ he(or she) will need to trim.

That's what I was probably going to lean towards. Only downfall is that Goodyear duratracs no longer come in that size for some reason. So if I ride stock and keep the flares off they will fit fine and once I lift them I just put the flares back? 235/75 are soooo much cheaper lol

The Duratracs are still going to be produced in the 15" size, They will stop production in some 15" sizes but the 31's, 33's ect will stick around.

id go with some solid 30" tires. you can get better tires in my opinion with the standard sizes. i ran it on stock fine and there a little bigger than the 235's

I found them in tire rack but they are $147 each! I bought them for my 01 almost 3 years ago and they were $108 or $118. If I buy the jeep in looking at now I'll be using 1996 classic wheels, nice looking but 15 inches.

I'm trying to find the cleanest jeep I can, do some simple things to it, nothing crazy, get it to do well off road, look clean and make people say wow that's cool.

I'm looking at a 1996 classic with 170k on it for $2500 and it's super clean. I do pref the 97+ very much mainly because of the interior but either people are way over priced, they have too many miles (I'm even scared of 170k) or they are ruined rusty jeeps. Those are ravines I had those on my 01. Should I try and get different jeep wheels for whatever one I get?
