Just get a radiator for a 92 it'll have the cap on it, as far as the heater control valve goes, go to a hardware store and just get a manual valve that fits in the line . I converted my 88 to the open system and it cools way better, I'm also running the manual valve in mine and have no problems.

Ok. 92 rad sounds good.

My XJ doesn't have a heater control valve. Do I really need to add one

Not really, it helps to have one for the summer so you don't have water flowing through the heater core creating heat in the cab. But its something you can add later on if you want to

Meh. If I turn my controls to off no heat comes in the cab. At least none that's noticeable.

Heat in the cab is controlled by the blend air door. Eliminating the HCV causes no ill effects, even here in Arizona.

I'm less than impressed with those plastic HCVs.
I warmed up my wife's Cherokee to change the oil. In the process of removing the filter, my left arm touched the HCV and it split apart in an instant scalding me. Had no prior leakage either. Wouldn't it be handy to have a failure like that out on the trail or in freeway gridlock? Get rid of it.

I feel the same way about those plastic tee's for flushing the cooling system.
I've had a couple bad experinces with those.

You are right, guess I'm just used to leaving my heater on since the AC doesn't work lol. And SS far as the coolant overflow, get one from a junkyard or a parts store like Autozone, they sell the universal ones
