Those both sound like good running 4.0s!

Thanks

The '93 has a noisy valvetrain and at least one collapsed lifter, but runs great. I have no worries driving it across the state, other than the cost of gas.

The '94 surprised me. When I got it home, I realized it had no oil showing on the dipstick! Took 3 quarts to get it to the 'add 1 quart' line, so she only had 2 in her. Oddly enough it ran fine with just 2 quarts and wasn't any louder. It'll be interesting to see what it looks like inside when I tear it apart. Considering the condition of the rest of the Jeep, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't driven like that until the failed brakes and wonky steering prompted them to park it. 4.0s are tanks.

Yeah. Ive always known of the durability of the I6s. My bud from highschool had an '87 that went over 250k with no troubles. We went everywhere in it too, stock! I work with a guy now that has '96 that just turned 360k miles!

Here's my DD '93, 194k miles running 10w40 high mileage. Other than the induction noise from yours, my 'ticking' is louder. You can actually hear the one collapsed lifter on #3 when I stick the camera down next to it. This engine gets 16mpg city and 21 highway, uses a bit of oil, and has good compression numbers across the board.

In fact, yours sounds almost like my '94, which has 120k miles (ignore the half disassembled engine bay). No idea of oil use, gas mileage, or compression numbers on this one. She feels healthy, but will be getting rebuild this year before plugging into the '93 with the 4wd driveline.

Thanks for posting the videos CodeXJ, i really apperciate the help. And you do have a point, it sort of does sound just like the red one, so it could be a collapsed lifter? And ill be checking as soon as i can get the chance for a mechanic to look at my jeep, i dont plan on driving anything else anyway

AFAIK the red one is just how Jeeps sound. I know two other people with 4.0Ls that sound just like it. Honestly if it wasn't for the fact that the valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket are bad, I'd just drop it into the '93. But since I need to take it out and half apart anyway, I'm going to rebuild it.

Well that 93 is VERY clean for something of its age, id get my jeep checked out this week but have to get ready because im driving to florida, not in the jeep sadly, but if i had the money id find a nice 5-speed 2.5 2WD just to have as a DD but i dunno. We'll see, first i want to find out whats wrong with this one and get it fixed

Thanks, wish I could take credit for it. I bought it 2 years ago from the original owner, you should see the stack of receipts I have for it. It's just a 2wd, sadly, but other than one hole in the dash panel it's immaculate inside. That's why I bought the '94, it was cheap and had a good drivetrain, but was unsafe to drive (no brakes, rusted unibody, wonky steering, ect). I'll be making the '93 into a 4wd this fall.

Rebuild it.
I just rebuilt mine in my 95 with a kit from enginetech.com for a little over $1000. I've put 2000 miles on it since and have had no problems.

Sounds like you got a good deal to me And itll make one clean mean off-roader as soon as you get the 4x4 set up from your 94 into it

When I had it at the machine shop I had the block bored 30 over. Take the $1500 you expect to spend for a crate motor, dump a grand into rebuilding it, and you have $500 to add better fuel injectors, a bored TB, an air intake and if you wanna upgrade, a 99 and up intake manifold.

Its already a 99. Im just frustrated with it right now and i dont even want anything to do with it at the moment, way to much to do and no not enough time to tear into it or take it to the shop or something.
