Default Serpintine belt question

I am sure this has been posted before, but I can't find the answer....I have a 1991 XJ 4.0 with air and Power steering, My serpentine belt is pretty darn tight, and the P/S pump is all the way down, and you still can't get the belt off very well, and if I change it, I want the correct one so I can use the adjustment and make it easier to change....SO, which is the correct Serpentine belt to use on the 4.0 with air and P/S ???? any ideas ?

Make sure you tighten the serp belt correctly otherwise your power steering pump will fail and the idler pulley squeal. VERY IMPORTANT. trust me I learned the hard way.

Are you sure you loosened that third, (?) bolt that's sort of hiding down under/behind the belt? It's sort of hidden. That tricked me once on my 90, which it think is the same.

Just use whatever Napa has...The new O'rielies belt I got squealed until I cleaned it with dish soap.

yes I have found all the bolts and nuts under and around the P/S Pump, it is all the way down, and the belt is very very tight, I had to pry it on. I am afraid it will hurt something. that is why I am looking for the correct belt for the 4.0L 6 cyl. with A/C and P/S. if someone has a part number or something like that it would be great. Thanks in advance !

I use a goodyear gatorback 4061025. I have a 4.0L with AC. Fit is perfect. I believe any brand's number that contains "1025" and has 6 ribs is the right size.

yea, but the number should be similar like I was trying to explain. I think the 1025 refers to the length (102.5") and the 06 is how many ribs. The 4 may just be GY's own designation.
These are all part numbers from different manufacturers of basically the same belt. (dimensionally)

4061025
K061025
5061025DR
1025K6
K061025
6K1025
5061025

See how they all have the "6" and the "1025"

EDIT: I just realized that the OP has a 1991. Looking up on rockauto, it supposedly uses a different size than the 87 that I have. So the part number I reported may not have any meaning depending on what the OP's vehicle has. Seems the 91 uses a 97.5" belt where mines is 102.5".

aa7kn, What number is the belt you currently have?

Good "soothing". Got me there. That DID cross my mind, that there are changes there that parts houses miss sometimes. Lets say maybe it went from AMC (all motors combined), in 90, to Chrysler in 91......Being he is not in the US, or even in America,...Anyway if the 87-90 is 5 inches shorter, maybe that's it.

Yea maybe the Renix era ended later in foreign countries? Maybe that is it, if he has a Renix setup, but a belt meant for HO, then yea, the belt would be 5" too short.

I was more thinking that the part suppliers might not have the info we have here, and there WAS a change of a bunch of stuff from 90 to 91.

Default Belt issue

Hi Guys and great info we are kicking around, My XJ ( according to the VIV) was made in the states, in Toledo Ohio in fact, it must have been an export model because of the KMPH on the dash, but it was made in the states so it should be the same as others. I checked the belt I have now ( the way short one and very tight) it is a Gates Micro-V AT K060990. the parts stores here are pretty stocked with stuff and I even went to the Jeep dealer and purchased a new Belt, just to find out it was short also and NO way was it going on. I wish I had measured the one I have on when it was off, but you guys say I might need a 105" or a 95" ??? wonder which one. I welcome any ideas and maybe I can fine the good year one on line somewhere that will ship to the UAE.The idler pully I have was making a bad noise and I got a new one from the dealer....so it "should" be the correct one, the new one is exactly as the one I had....thanks guys, I hope to hear from you soon.

Well, your current belt appears to be 99 inches long i.e. the "990" in the part number. If it is currently too tight, I'd try the 102.5 inch next, the 95" probably won't even fit if your 99" one is already too tight. Look for any of the part numbers I posted below. Once you recognize the numbering convention, you can easily pick out a slightly shorter or longer belt and go by trial and error (if need be).

Not sure why your vehicle doesn't seem to be following the parts stores listings, but we do know you need a longer belt. Whatever it may be, wrong listings or a early production date cutoff, find a good fitting belt and just always buy that size.

4061025
K061025
5061025DR
1025K6
K061025
6K1025
5061025

Try any of the part numbers above or have a parts store cross reference any of them. They are all the same belt by different manufacturers. Then if you need a slightly longer belt, look for a 4061030 (103") or 401035 (103.5") etc. and visa versa for shorter. Get it?

Make sure you get that sucker TIGHT when putting it back in. I left just a teeny tiny bit of slack in mine (like you'd get on spring-tensioner set ups) and it squealed loudly. Had to tighten it up so that it was difficult to move the belt with my fingers.
