I need to install a new seatbelt component with the retractor and I have no idea where to start. The old seat belt kept getting hit in the door so I need to replace it for the car to pass state inspection. I have the 1996 cherokee xj 4.0 straight 6. If anyone who knows where to find the complete directions it would be very helpfull. I am installing the belt in the front drivers side door. I would rather do it myself then pay $350 at a shop for it, like the estimate said.

Anyone know how to install it correctly?

It would be greatly appreciated.

Are you working on a 2 door or 4 door?

The belt assembly for the 4 door only has 2 bolts, and they are torx T55. For the top bolt, pop off the cover where it attaches to the door pillar for access to the bolt. The bottom bolt may require the removal of some trim to gain access to the bolt head. These can be quite stubborn to remove and will require some effort. The main thing is to keep the torx socket seated firmly in the bolt head so that it does not slip and strip the head of the bolt. PM Shadowangel to see how his install went, he just changed his drivers side belt recently.

Thanks a lot. I will be doing the installation next week and it should go pretty well. But I still need to find a tool to fit those bolts.

I just did the exact same thing last weekend and it was a piece of cake. I had a little bit of trouble removing the bolts, but it wasn't too bad. I actually used a t50 instead of a t55, and it seemed snug enough. Didn't have any issue with the bolts stripping or slipping or anything. As Winston noted, they're in there pretty snug. Took under an hour to remove the trim piece, take out the old one, put in the new one, and reassemble the trim.

i've used a T50 in my seatbelt adventures as well... you can find the bit online for like 5 bucks shipped.

Yeah sounds like its not too hard. The only problem I can see is that the screws holding in the trim piece are rusted pretty bad, so I hope I can get them out.
