Seafoam vs. BG44K Observations

So, I ran a can of Seafoam through the gas tank to try and clean everything up. While it was in the tank, picked up a can of BG44K fuel treatment for pretty cheap. After talking to Mr. cruiser54, decided it would be a fun experiment to throw in the BG44K on my next fill-up (directly after the tank that had Seafoam added) to see if there would be a noticeable difference over Seafoam.

After going through the tank with Seafoam, I noticed no difference in the way my XJ performed at all. I filled up my next tank and added the 44K. I'm now about 3/4 through that tank and already notice a smoother idle/smoother overall ride and better MPGs (by a little more than 1)

So in conclusion of this little experiment, Seafoam doesn't do much. It probably would if you hadn't ran any fuel treatment in over a year. But I would suggest going for BG44K. It's harder to find and a little more expensive but worth the money.

Or your fuel system was so gunked up that seafoam cleaned most of it and 44k finished the job. It is kind of hard to prove one is better than the other when used back to back.

I'll give the 44k a try next time I use injector cleaner though and see if it helps at all. What parts store sells it?

Seafoam has a pretty strong stoddard solvent as the active ingredient and it can help clean the fuel system, but I now primarily use two fuel system additives for my vehicles.

1. Techron (by Chevron) for preventing issues and keeping the spray pattern of injectors effective.

2. BG44K is the most aggressive and I use it exclusively when the vehicle exhibits symptoms which may be related to the fuel system.

I continue to use Seafoam in my small engines.

Agreed. Not enough time for new gunk to be removed.

In the last 10 months I've used seafoam a couple of times but could see no improvement. My most recent attempt I used 1 can of BG44K with 20 gallons of Chevron 93 oct. & after 1/4 of a tank there is a noticeable improvement in my mileage & smoother engine. Really seems to have cleaned up a couple of sticky "new" 746 injectors I purchased.

But that's just me.

I haven't found a local parts outlet so I just order it off of ebay. About twice the cost of seafoam. Usually here in 2 days. Comes with a neat little funnel to eliminate spillage.

44k is considerably better than sea foam. The only problem is, all BG products are supposed to be commercial use only so it is a bit harder to get them yourself. I work at a shop that uses them and have witnessed how good and fast they work, especially if combined with the whole kit. We have a kit the comes with the 44k, an intake system cleaner, a fuel additive to help keep deposits from happening again, and an injector cleaner that you hook directly up to the fuel rail and turn off the fuel pump.

I use Sea Foam every few tanks and could never tell any difference. Ha ha it just runs perfectly. I'll stick with my Sea Foam.

There IS a difference. Been using 44K since it came out.

So Seafoam did NOTHING in one tank of gas and 44 K DID something in one tank of gas. I would expect those resultes as 44K needs no Seafoam as a predeccessor to do it's work. Generally about 1/2 way through the tank with 44K, a difference can be felt.

See, that was my thought process. Only because I used a can of Seafoam once every few months through the tank. After doing that, it still ran fine. But it wasn't until BG44K that I realized Seafoam isn't that great. Like I said, never a noticeable difference after running Seafoam. But a huge difference after about half a tank with the 44K. She's never ran so happy.

You are correct, sir. It really didn't do anything except put my mind to rest, knowing there was fuel treatment in my tank and maybe my pump/injectors will last a little longer.

I've always recommended Seafoam, but now after my first experience with 44K, I won't recommend Seafoam again. I'll be raving about 44K from here on out. But as said above, it isn't found at just any parts store. I picked it up off eBay. You'll have luck either there or Amazon

The only people pooh-poohing 44K are those who HAVEN'T used it.

Yep, sounds like it. Now I understand why you would always recommend it. The stuff works, and works well

I use it and have done the forced induction clean on my ZJ, I noticed an improvement in fuel mileage and throttle response right off the bat.
