Default Scanning for codes without scanner

Hey everyone,

Ok I've tried searching and I know I should either just buy a scanner or take it to a shop to get scanned. But hopefully I can get the most probably answer from the community.

Background Info.

99 xj with no gauges. I think its a no bus situation but I wanted to somehow confirm without going through the above process of properly scanning. Starts and runs fine. Shows a check engine light, airbag light and milleage. Radio, power doors and locks work. No overhead console. Brand new battery.

Until just now, none of the gauges worked. If i honked the hown. My tack would work for roughly 3-4 seconds then drop back down. I just tried it and now I have both battery voltage and oil pressure gauges working.

I pulled the gauges and inspected the terminals in the back to determine if they were corroded or not. Looked completly fine.

Did the on/off to the ignition 5 times, no codes come up on the OD display but i get 4 beeps.

Can't search out what those 4 beeps stand for or if I'm on the right track.

I've read these posts to come to the conclusion im at now.

Thanks, I'd like to but its not insured right now and that means I'd have to load it up on my goose neck trailer to transport it. I already know that what I should do to get a concise answer. But hoping for some more input.

That will be about the only way to pull up the codes if you don't have a code reader of your own. If I am not mistaken. The turning of the key off and on doesn't work on the newer Jeeps.

Ok thanks. I thought I saw a thread a while ago stating(for a similar year xj) that the beeps were for certain codes as well. Anyone know what years display the codes in the OD screen? Thought mine would do that but the mileage just stays there. That's why I thought the four beeps meant something.

I do not know what year it stops but I do know that it works on '95 and older. I know this becuase mine is a '95 Sport and I can code it at home using the key on/off method.

Thought I'd just add a final outcome as the problem was somewhat resolved.

Background:
I've found a tonne of sand in my truck after purchase.

Had my buddy look at it as the gauges were dead. He determined that there was a short between the horn switch in the column and the fuse panel on the passenger side. Took out the horn fuse relay and the gauges lit back up.

My buddy suspects that the truck was on the beach a bunch and possibly got wet at one point. No rust at all but you never know.

Anyways.

Since I have a middle finger I just ditched the horn fuse and settled with working gauges and no horn.

Hope it was sand from a fresh water creek and not salt water. Salt water is so damaging. Been deep in hurricane storm surge a few times now and the resultss (when I couldn't wash it down right away) was disasterous. But still, saying that you don't have signs of rust, sounds great. Be sure to check the brakes. They tend to be the first to go.

Absolutely everything below the floorboards is brand new. No concern there. No rust found throughout a four month build.
