Default is it safe to drive like this?

my 01 sport had the ac compressor go out in it. If i dont engage the clutch by turning on a/c, will it be safe to drive like this? my fear is it will sieze and the belt will go, possibly breaking other things. But if i just leave the a/c off, will that waive this issue?
thanks!

Should be fine, the cylinders aren't pumping until you hit the switch.
I'd unplug the compressor just to make sure it doesn't get bumped though

x2 remove the A/C clutch relay from the power distribution center under the hood. Shouldn't throw a code unless you request A/C. This includes the two defrost settings

if your clutch is seized I wouldn't think it would engage the condensor when you turn on the AC. mine is seized and when I turn on the AC... nothing happens at all

No such animal. XJs without A/C have a dummy pulley in place of the compressor.

You must have low refrigerant then, if the line pressure is within acceptable parameters you bet that clutch will engage
