Runs better with tps disconnected !!
I've checked the Ground Strap, connections to computer, replaced the TPS, also new spark plugs & coil-spark plug harness(WIRES). It's a new car to me/daughter and runs superb, the previous owner said the check engine light was on, he took it to dealer, told him thousands to fix and it needed a new computer..During my test drive prior to buying...he was surprised that none of the symptoms were showing..like Check engine light, sputterring, stalling, then, he said after a few minutes it runs fine..... so i bought it and several weeks later, the symptoms ,but without the check engine light, now, I get to play around with it,..,replaced the TPS, IT WAS THE ONLY THING CODED, and it took the computer a little time to adjust, and so far, up until now,.....perfect..... so I've checked all the above, and check engine light is on, now.. and daughter called, so I showed up and I checked everything, then disconnected the TPS, AND IT RUNS SMOOTH..... somethings wrong, of course, has anyone had this to remedy, I have some ideas.,,WHAT DO YOU THINK !! thanks..I'm on the Big Island, Hawaii.....engine 4.0 6cyl..

Thxx for the response..No, haven't done that ..Guess thats next.. will do.. ...everything seems solid on this '99 cherokee sport... I'll keep on.. then post the Fix. thx again..
I had a 01 same issues.. Is it reading tps low voltage? Seems wierd but mine adter weeks of diognosis ended up being the clock spring. There is a 5v lead that runs throught the clock spring when the tps sends readings back to the computer. If there is a short in the clock spring it fools the readinv oc the tps so the computer thinks the tps is bad.
I've read that the TPS voltage is to be between 8.25 & 8.50,. Is that correct, for a 99 cherokee 4.0.... any way it appeared to run fine for a stretch, then turned it off and worked. After work, started it right up, it then ran a little rough and slowly started to burn rich, sputter a little. so I disconnected the TPS (again) and it runs smooth, without burning rich.. So, you think I should attack the clock spring ?....I found a way to reconnect the CS on you tube....any other Ideas, thanks, Buzz
NEW INFO: the voltage on the TPS was ok ..except !!! the signal wire was at full open at idle... 5. OR SO V IS GOOD FOR THE '99 the 8. something voltage must be for another RELAY OR SENSOR So, since the airbag lite is on, the horn doesn't work, and the TPS is funky It's off with the steering wheel and repair or find a new CS or check the 5v line voltage...... thanks for your tips. The reason I had to put this info on this post is that C Forum won't let me sign in on the reply page...... since i ran a Malware firewall. It's always something...Keep on Keepin on !!!!..Buzz...More later..so avjeep parts or something like that on craigslist for a CS ??

I Dont remember now its been a while what thd voltage reading actually is but when you run the code it should say the tps voltage is low or high.. I know the older jeeps had a adjustable tps but i think 96 and newer theg are not. If it reads tps and you replaced it then it has to be something tripping it. That i know the cs is in that line of tripping that sensor. I am not goin to say 100% thats it but its very likly or a short in the wires / conector or computer possibly but i think thats unlikly. Computer will usually throw like 20 codes when its bad and unlikly to even run. I know that back when i was searching it i saw you can get under the dash and unplug it to see if it presists but i never did. After all the research and parts replaced i was confident and sure enough it was fixed. I got lucky and found one for 10 bucks off avparts jeep on craigs but i think ebay had tgem faily cheap.
I have been told that it is broke from deployed airbads or from turning the wheel when the pitman arm is unbolted. If you recently put a new steering setup on or a drop pitman arm then its very possible.

I was having weird problems with the jeep bucking and throwing codes for MAP sensor and TPS voltage high. I have just drove through it because i am rarely in it. So i finally decided test the MAP sensor and it is fine. I tested the TPS and it was hitting upwards of 10V. Well I disconnected the map sensor and the thing drives like its brand new absolutely no bucking or weird idling. Well idk how to get the voltage to go back down to the 5 V that it is supposed to be. I also broke the Clockwork spring when i was working on putting in a right hand drive kit into it. I would say that is the problem but it was doing the bucking and acting up months before i did that.
