I don't use RTV on the Diff covers, I use gasket. But you can use Red, blue or black. I would wait at least overnight before filling, cure time really depends on how much RTV you use, More you use the longer you need to wait.

I have used red and black. never had a problem with either really.

what I have found is put the RTV on the diff cover and let it sit like 20-30 minutes and then you can throw it on the jeep and hand tight the bolts then torque it down after about 2 hours

Generally, I use blue. Never had any cover leak.

Red, blue, black - all should work fine.
  • Make sure your sealing area is clean and dry, both on the cover and on the differential housing.
  • Apply a thin bead around the complete housing. I always go completely around the bolt holes. It is important the bead is continuous. Thin is fine, do not make it real thick or spread it out with your finger, no need.
  • Let it dry until a skin is formed (about 15-30 minutes).
  • Install your cover. I usually wait about an hour before I put the lube in the axle. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR JEEP WITHOUT THE LUBE! Bad things will happen if you 'forget' to fill the diff.
  • You do not have to wait any longer.

I agree. The above is how I always do it as well.

I've also heard a lot of good things about "lubelocker" and I am going to try them the next time on my daily driver.

Link to them.

I use grey on pretty much everything, but a diff cover should really use a gasket

I did my diffs last weekend and used the black rtv. Let it dry about 30 minutes and added fluid. No problems and no leaks. It's just personal preference which ever you use.

They didn't have the gasket for my Dana 30 at autozone so I used red rtv and after reading how everyone said they did it, I apparently did it wrong (didn't wait any time at all) but she doesn't leak so I'm happy!

I just hate scraping that much RTV off. It does work well though
