I purchased a heat shield roll from the parts store and put it on injectors 1-4. Didn't do 5 and 6 because I had to go out somewhere. I also put some on the fuel line by injectors 3 and 4. I am still getting the heat soak misfire.
I've been doing alot of research. People have gone to great lengths to fix the issue, including totally replacing and modifying the fan system and installing vents in the hood. The bottom line is it is an engineering design flaw. the electric fan is supposed to cool off that section of the motor/exhaust manifold. The electric fan just doesn't cut it, and there is no where for the heat to go. The best idea I read was a guy who installed an on/off switch with a timer for the electric fan. So when he turned the XJ off, he flipped a switch which turns on the electric fan, which was on a timer-preset for 2.5 minutes (I think). I'm not sure which route i'm going to go yet. I really think there needs to be vents to get the heat out, but I am worried about opening up the hood and putting in leuvers, which could let rain in.

I left that part out but I have my e-fan on a switch and when I'm wheeling or its hot I leave it on all the time. I Aldo have hood vents. 280z turbo vents. My hood was oxidized and I have since painted it flat black but I don't have a pic.
I was worried about the rain but oh well. I live in so cal so its not to big of a deal. I bought some metal flashing that I was going to cut out and put wing nuts on to seal over the vents. As you can tell the turbo vents the drivers side is bigger. When it rains it goes right on to the throttle body. I also thought of making a shield just over the throttle body. Bit no time = no mods.

I'm sure someone has made a vent setup that's OK for the rain. I have found an e-fan the pushed more air (cfm's?). When I get home in a week I'll post a link. I'm going to upgrade it and see what happens.

please post the link to the higher CFM fan. I am going to get an estimate from a body shop to make a hood cowl. I've seen pictures of them and they look cool and I think it will do the trick letting the heat escape without getting water on top of the engine. I don't want to do it myself. I think it's beyond my capabilities, at least to make it look right. I finished wrapping my injectors and I used what was left over to wrap the fuel line bar. I haven't tested it yet.

I used wire ties to hold the heat shield wrap. They had heat shield tape, but I thought that would make a mess if i ever wanted or needed to take the injectors and fuel line out.

Looks crazy but if it works it works! Let me know because I might do my #3 injector. I'm 2500 miles away from my computer so I'll post it when I get back.

I drove it. It was only about 58 degrees today. I still had the heat soak misfire, but it was not as bad. I think it definately helped, but it is not a complete fix. It might work better if you take the fuel rail off and then wrap the injectors. Maybe double up on the heat shield too. I am going to get some more of the heat shield and finish the rest of the fuel rail.
There was a post I read somewhere of a guy who installed shims in between the hood and the hood hinges, so it lifted up the back of the hood when it's closed. I think thats a good idea too, and a cheap fix. I also read on XJ's prior to 2000, that having a clogged cat can cause the manifold to run hotter than normal causing the heat soak issue.

The cat thing is very true and if you go to an exhaust shop its cheap to have them pressure test it. I'd also look at replacing the crank sensor as I mentioned earlier.
As far as shimming the hood. DO NOT DO IT! It might work for a redneck with a beater XJ but don't drive on the road like that. Picture rear ending someone and having those hood bolts shear off and making your jeep a convertible...with you inside.
Also they sell hood louvers which are a little more pricey but looks really nice. I can't imagine a body shop charging much to instal.

I stopped by a body shop to get a price on the hood with the cowl, installed, painted. The guy is going to get back to me later this week. I'll post it when I get the estimate. I know it's not going to be cheap.

below is the link to the better electric fan. If you look around they sell a 10in also. My buddy had his fan out and I measure the blades at 12" and it was 3" thick.

You might even be able to get this one to fit. If you could run this 12" fan it would never run hot lol
