My '96 XJ (4.0) has always had the slightest bit of a rough idle. Just figured it that it was the nature of the beast. So the other day I was replacing my fuel filter and hoses. Removed the fuel cap and went to release the fuel pressure at the Schrader valve. Took the cap off and noticed a few drips of fuel come out. Pressed the valve stem and nothing. Got a valve stem tool and turned the stem in one plus turn. After finishing up and starting it no more rough idle and none since. Evidently at some point before I got the vehicle and maybe when the fuel pump was replaced the stem was never tightened. Crazy.

Didn't run it today but I'll give an update at some point.

So today we took a ~120mile round trip. Had to pull a 5 mile 9% grade about half way into the trip. Once to the top it was easy cruising until we got to town. Here is where I noticed at the red lights (all 3) that the very slight rough idle was still gone. In park the same. Got home and still good. Can't say it was because of the loose valve stem since I changed both filter and hoses but a good chance it was.

Nice trip until the main brake line to the rear sprang a leak. Luckily we were at the bottom of the mountain.
