Yes I did. Just need to read through them. I have been up to my eyeballs in work lately.

Note: Another reason I prefer to use diesel blends over regular is NOT because of some "magical" lubrication feature but that majority have detergents in them. Think of it like cleaning the insides out.

Passenger car motor oils for gasoline engines also have detergents in them.

Diesel oils like Rotella T6 have more detergents than 'auto' oils like Mobil 1 5-30.

Having said that, when we get a new to us used vehicle, XJ or whatever. We use Rotella T6 and change at 5000 miles x 2 rotations and then use Mobil 1 5-30 there after.

We do have a routine for a new to us used car- seafoam, techtron, quart of water steam clean into engine combustion, ATF in oil x a few days and then change the oil and filter.

Diesel engines produce more combustion byproducts than gasoline engines and need additional detergents to deal with them. What evidence is there that the 4.0L gasoline engine needs more detergents than what's provided by gasoline engine oil?

Cool.. thanks... and no worries.. I completely understand... just lemme know when you can.

As to the oils... agreed. If you look at the science behind the different formulas, they do make different ones for specific applications. Does that mean that other ones would NOT work in that same motor as some have mentioned in the thread?... Absolutely not. Of course they would work....but that's not really the point here. It's finding what works better for a specific engine type...our older I6 designed plant. And even then, it could come down even a little further to the specific environment it's being used in... different climates, etc.
The thread was originally started off of verifiable facts from research, not just an idea that the op, salad pulled out of his butt just for giggles.
The facts are clearly stated there... and using that information, it's up to each one of us to determine what is best for our own Jeeps given the environments and how each of us use our Jeeps on a daily basis.

When I buy a used vehicle with unknown maintenance or even less. no maintenance or very few oil changes. I've seen some engines in very poor condition and need the high detergent 'diesel' oil to gently and slowly clean them out from the inside. That is why I use it for about 10k miles and then change to Mobil 1.

Evidence? The ****ty poor maintenance schedule that 95+% of 'Joe Q Public' follow. So yes 'THAT' 4.0L gasoline engine needs more detergents than what's provided by gasoline engine oil.

Except one, the assumption that the 4.0L needs more zinc and phosphorous than gasoline engine motor oil provides. That hasn't been verified, and nobody has provided any research supporting it.

Suppose I tell you that Brawndo Diesel Oil is better for the 4.0L because it has more electrolytes, and electrolytes are what a 4.0L craves. If the 4.0L doesn't actually crave electrolytes, I haven't really proven that Brawndo is better.

This thread shows that Rotella is high in zinc and phosphorous. It doesn't show that higher zinc and phosphorous make any difference in the 4.0L. Maybe the 800 ppm limit in regular gasoline oil is enough. Nobody has been able to demonstrate that it isn't.

That's not scientific evidence. That's anecdotal evidence. You start off by saying you don't even know the history of these vehicles, so how do you know what has caused the condition in which you find them?

I followed the published maintenance schedule and never once used Rotella. When my engine came out, it was clean and pretty and didn't look anything like that mess you posted in that pic. Therefore, if we can accept anecdotal evidence as "proof" of anything, my anecdotal evidence "proves" that regular oil is just fine for the 4.0L.

In case you missed it, i'm not using a 4.0L like you have.

Rotella will help clean all that sludge with it's high detergents. OK maybe not that much sludge, but you get what I mean.

I it just Rotella you are against or all diesel engine oils? Do you have any evidence that it will harm anything in the 4.0, or any "scientific" proof that the extra additives don't help a 4.0 to last longer? I run 15w40 Diesel oil in mine because I get it for cheap and I use it in everything else I own that has an engine, and I believe it does more good than bad vs regular 10w30 gas oil.

I'm not against Rotella. I'm against fads and bandwagons, especially when an effort has been made to persuade people to join up based on unproven assumptions. I'm especially against them when they begin to take on the characteristics of a cult, where disagreement with the accepted canon is not allowed.

No! But I'm not arguing either one of those points, so there's no reason for me to go looking for any.

I don't have a 4.0L. I have a 4.6L stroker, and I use Driven 10W30 Synthetic Hot Rod oil, which has more zinc and phosphorous than Rotella has ever had. I mean, that's stuff's crazy with zinc. It's got so much zinc the US Mint could mine my used oil to make pennies.

I'm guessing your thought process was headed in a similar direction. With our modified engines, you and I would have a reason to need the additional ZDDP, and we would understand why. We also might need a more robust detergent package to help wash out the excess zinc and phosphorous. I know I use the Driven oil instead of a ZDDP additive because the detergent package is balanced for the amount of ZDDP blended into it. But unlike a diesel oil, it's also balanced for more frequent heating and cooling cycles, to handle condensation.

Unlike us, 4.0L owners on the Rotella bandwagon don't really have any idea why they're using it. They just take it on faith that they need more zinc (It's what a motor craves!) to prevent cam failures that haven't happened and wear that hasn't worn.
