Roof rack question
Hi I'm new to CF so I'm sorry if this comes across as an overly noob question. I've seen many guys throw a full size spare and lights up on the roof rack. However a body mounted light bar or safari rack is out of the question. Is it possible to go to the jy and pick up a 3rd roof rack crossmember and add it? if so how is it done, and will the roof rack need to be removed/ reinstalled? Thanks

Dunno but if you see a pic of it done the way you like just PM the user! I have heard of people just wiring some lights into another X-member I just don't remember who.

Yes I think you can do this. But, I'm not 100% sure I say go get one and try it. They can't be that expensive. Also take pics so we can all see how it worked out.

are you talking about the pieces that can shift back and forth? if so, you can add like 5 or 6 of them i believe, a buddy of mine had about 4/5 on his XJ.

Yes thats what I'm talking about. I need the 2 for the spare, but wanted the 3rd for a cheap, easy, semi-factory appearing light bar.

They are easy to take off and add, just take out the front or end bolts on the rails and remove the plastic end caps, then just slide on the new bar, I'd go to the JY to pick up an extra one el cheapo.
I scavenged one of a grand and cut it down to size and used it as my light bar, much cheaper than this bad boy: http://www.quadratec.com/products/72112_10X_PG.htm
I'll go take some pics...

Thanks Schmoozer. If I can't find one from an XJ do you know what are the years of the Grands that can be swapped?

Nice. Personally I think it looks fine. I'll take function over form any day. I'll try and head out to the jy sometime soon and find a xmember. Thanks for the help

If you plan on going the grand Cherokee route there's a couple points to note (in retrospect I would of done mine a little differently). You have to drill holes to accommodate what ever tool you use to secure the rails to the roof. Put the plastic piece that slides on the rail in place before you mark and cut (if you want it clicked in place after you're all done), this will make the left and right rails different, so don't put them on backwards! I used (4) sheet metal screws to hold mine in place, it will probably be fine at highway speeds but if I were to do it again I'd bite the bullet, take the head liner down, and bolt it on, I ended up half taking it out anyway to run the wires for the lights. Hope that helps!
