So I think my 310,000 mile champ is finally kicking the bucket. I was pulling my boat one day and it started tapping. A week later it was a full blown banging. Now I could probably drive close to a window and break it its so loud. (ya ppl look at me funny too) How do I verify its a rod knock and not a pully or flex plate or something? Although I'm 70% sure its a rod. Cant do stethoscope its so loud I would probably go deaf. I have 0 money to replace the engine for at least a month or 2. If it is a rod what weight oil can I throw in to go another 1000 miles and not blow the engine? I live in CO and its almost winter. I know its a pretty pathetic question but any help is good.

 

There is no oil that will take-up the clearance when they are that bad. But you might try 20-50 and lucas or stp.
You can look at the flexplate and see if there is any cracks coming from the center.
The only other thing you could do is replace the bearings,they are cheap and it would last a couple of months if the crank is ok,sometimes the thrust goes bad and does no damage to the crank. any scratch or burr will destroy bearings quickly.

 

mines been knokin me crazy for about 5000 miles now i started runing 20-50 in it and it dosnt stop the knoking at all. i just figure ill run it till it blows up
