Default RHD engine replacement

Hi all,

I'd like to buy a new or rebuilt engine for my XJ.
It's a RHD, Cherokee Limited. 4.0L petrol Auto Trans.

Can I use a Left Hand Drive engine on a Right Hand Drive car?

Are there any specifications that I need to strictly adhere to when trying to buy a new engine to replace my old one?

I need guidance.

Thanks

No difference between a LHD and a RHD engine block & head; it's the bracketry that bolts to the engine block & head that make it LHD vs RHD.

Make sure you use the proper Flex Plate for your year; there's 4 different versions IIRC. The do have a tendency to crack, but if yours isn't, reusing it is a surefire way to make sure you have the right one.

Since you have a 2000, or at least according to the box, look out for the non-TUPY head from that era, they're prone to cracking. Looking through the oil fill cap, you'll be able to see TUPY cast into the metal if it's the revised model. For as much work as you're putting into it, I'd be very hesitant to put a non-TUPY head in as part of a motor swap. Plenty of aftermarket options out there that are very cost effective compared to properly rebuilding the head' it's a no-brainer...

Thanks for the response. Can you direct me to a genuine dealer that can sell me a non-TUPY engine head? I'm in New Guinea and need to source this part from somewhere on the other side of the world (USA), so if you could show me to your best shop, that would be great help...

Is it impossible to get one form Qld, Australia?, they are not uncommon in wrecking yards, private sales, Ebay and other social media sales etc

I imagine it is possible to arrange freight from somewhere like Cairns or Townsville to PNG?, there would be wreckers in both cities

Then again, it may work out cheaper to get things from USA, it often is

I live in Australia, and Rock Auto is almost always substantially less cost, and almost as quick

depends on the year of the engine, but some brackets and locations will be different LHD vs RHD, and if you get a different year engine, that could well cause an issue

I have seen posts from dudes with RHD "Postal" Jeeps in USA, and they have run into this problem, and I could only suggest import a used bracket for here

Sorry if you misunderstood me, but you want the TUPY version of the 0331 head. It's the revised version that is less prone to cracking. It's the earlier, non-TUPY version of the 0331 head, which came on most 2000 and 20001 Cherokees that you don't want..

Russ Pottenger over on the JeepStrokers forum is the best that anyone can recommend for stroked Jeep 4.0s. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't sell you an off-the-shelf head. Of maybe a stroker is worth your time and money since you're this deep into it anyway...
