pilot bearing

pilot bearing
put a new clutch in on a 1988 flywheel and the pilot bearing has notches in it on one side but it just floats behind the flywheel. am i missing a piece or does it just float in that space and does the notches go towards the motor side? when i pulled it out didn't have a pilot bearing at all. it has a internal slave cylinder.
