So may have been covered before but i did a search and tons of post came up and after reading thru 10 i didnt find what i was looking for. So im trying to reinstall my engine tomorrow but looking at the pilot bearing in my old engine and the one that came with my new clutch just trying not to leave anything out. the old pilot bearing has a sleeve on it and the new one does not. so the big question is do i need to get a pilot bearing with a sleeve or should i just put this sleeveless one further into the crank. Im pretty sure im going to get the answer of get the sleeved one but figured id ask the experts. thanks for any help!
if it measures the same inside and outside it will work some kits come with a bearing some come with a bushing personally i like the bushings since ive never had bushing fail and leave me stranded i have had a bearing come apart tho
Are you talking about the big sleeve as shown on the left with the yellow-ish grease (maybe it's green.. I'm color deficient so it looks yellow to me):
If so - and your new pilot bearing is just the bearing (as shown on the right), then you need to install the old sleeve with the new bearing.
If it's not the big sleeve in the picture and is like a thin sleeve just around the pilot bearing, then I'd just go and buy a new bushing and sleeve as pictured on the left.
I just went through the same thing. I ordered a clutch kit and it came with everything but the bearing did not look like the one that came out. My dad and my self work for Timken and he was looking at it and the bearings were different. (He has been a mechanical engineer for over 40 years. AKA he knows his ****. He felt like the bearing on the right looked for a lower speed and the package said clutch bearing. Did not give us the warm gut feeling. So he said we should order the other one (Above picture on the left with the yellow grease) Sure enough advanced auto parts had it and together looking just like the above one. Perfect fit and no issues.
yes PatHenry the bearing in my old motor looks like the one on the left with the yellow grease. I pulled the bearing out of the sleeve but have no way of grabbing onto that sleeve. Reckon ill have to run to the local parts store and hope i get as lucky as @95XJPrerunner and they have it in stock.
