Default Reverse is a guessing game.

So my 1999 Cherokee Sport starting having transmission issues. I took and had transmission rebuilt and new torque converter. After a few months it wouldn't go in reverse without a few tries. After several trips to shop it still goes in reverse when it wants. Its been at the shop for months they tell me it's done but then after a few test drives its back to reverse by switch from park a few times and it might engage eventually. Anyone have answers. I want my Jeep back and to backwards.
Thanks

Try the test from the Service Manual

Engage Reverse and time how long it takes to engage

This should be less than 1.5 seconds

For reasons I do not know, the AW4 and related trans tend to lose reverse.

As far as I know, Reverse is a direct engagement in that it does not involve any solenoids, mainly higher internal pressure

It is also possible (especially of it passes the above test) that it may be some very slight maladjustment of the selector cable (so it is not selecting reverse, check reverse lights are on?)

Hi, thanks when it does engage its quick but then other times nothing and yes the reverse lights go on even though it hasn't i engaged. I was thinking it might be a solenoid. The shop mentioned valve body, but, for some reason they just can't get it done. I will be stopping by again today.
Thanks

Adjust your throttle valve cable properly. 3 minute job. And then, keep an eye on it and make sure it is staying. Also, if they used the wrong fluid there could be issues. do the adjustment first. Here's a video.

Seeing as you are taking it to the trans shop, I would ask what the measured pressures of the trans are, using the specifications in the ATSG AW4 manual, page 7-8 as a guide

Reverse requires the highest pressure

What one would not want to hear is "we have not measured that"

In the case of these trans that have lost reverse, it would seem that they loose friction in the relevant plates or clutches

It may be the pressure is too low, or it may be wear, due to age, mileage and heat

there is several types of auto trans "rebuild", including a **** one, a master kit, or a remanafacture

Agreed^^, but I'd still like to know that the TV cable is adjusted properly before dealing with the "rebuilders" again.

Agreed also, but I do have to say, one would really hate it if you take your ***** to a trans shop, and they haven't attended that

I believe there is a species of **** rebuild, where they dont actually replace many parts, as such

All the more reason to check it first. Knowledge is power. OP will know right away what a **** shop it may be. No more guessing.
