Remove the t-stat cover and water pump.....stick a garden hose in the t-stat opening in the head....flush, flush, flush.. Re-install a new t-stat and new water pump. How about a new fan clutch and rad cap while u r at it.

This is how i did on mine.....
Drain coolant (don't even bother with the radiator's drain plug, just remove the lower radiator hose)
Install Prestone Flush n Fill Kit
Remove thermostat
Re-install thermostat housing
Here is the instruction.
In my limited knowledge, removing the thermostat will allow you to flush the whole system otherwise you will have to wait for the thermostat to open up before the engine get flushed (which i find it almost impossible for the engine to get warm up).
When done with the flushing,
Install new thermostat (i went with 185*)

I used the super flush. Do all the rest but b put it in run for 6 hours then change and re fill. Only bad thing about doing in winter is no cold weather protection. But it really cleaned my 2000 4.0. Now it is clean and green and heater is hot.

To do THE BEST FLUSH, yes, both the stat and pump need to be off.....is it the only way to flush....no. Water from the garden hose goes in the head and out the block. Lots of room to change the rad when the stat, pump and fan clutch are out of the way. If u've done the water pump once, then u r a pro at it.....just 4 bolts and a new gasket & rtv.....u'll be amazed at crud that comes out if u flush directly thru the head and out the block with the stat AND pump removed.
