Replace cam sensor or just replace the whole distributor?
So my cam sensor is acting up. Throwing codes. I believe I'm getting the occasional misfire. (Feels like a hard downshift) and the other morning going to work she lost pretty much all power. Didon't die just went into almost like a limp mode. And there was a weird noise coming from the distributor I think. After about 30 seconds she got all her power back and ran. Now my question is should I replace just my cam sensor for about $30-$40 or just do my whole distributor for about $70. Would like to hear everyones thoughts. Thanks.

is it throwing a code for the cam sensor?
usually the cam sensor and crank sensor will throw the same code, or when one does, the other does too.
i would just change out the cam sensor, takes all of about 10 minutes if it's your first time, and no worries about messing anything up.
changing the whole distributor can be a pain especially if the oil pump turns a bit on you and you have to line it back up with a screwdriver, then you still have the chance of installing it out 180 and creating more work.

I've had to replace a distributor on each of my Jeeps. When the bushings wear out, the rotor will slop around and whack the cam sensor. It doesn't like that much.
Check that cam sensor visually. If you can see that it's been whacked, you need to replace the distributor.

So I replaced the cam sensor today. When I took the distributor cap off I realized the plate on the cam sensor was severely cracked. Pulled it out, installed the new one and she fired right up. No CEL but I disconnected the battery so time will tell if it comes back. But she seems to be running stronger. Thanks for the help guys.

You are right. Stuff wears out and gets whacked.
