Well, i got out the volt meter again. Thanks to Cruiser54 for the outstanding TPS adjustment instructions that he sent me!
. I went to my TPS to take the Reference voltage reading. I got 5.78 on my volt meter. Puzzled, because everyone says that they get a reading between 4.9 and 5.0. Anyways I took 5.75 x .17 to come up with .97. I adjusted the TPS to .97. Started up the Jeep and bang, high idle of 1500. Thinking that maybe my volt meter is messed up, I took a reading off my battery *engine running* and i got 17.82!!!!!! Ok, that is way to high. Turned the jeep off and again took a battery reading and got 15 volts that dwindled down to 14 after 5 minutes. Now if my alt is truly putting out that much juice, wouldn't my battery pop? I'm wondering if I maybe need to invest in a new volt meter.

totally off topic, but does your jeep have an egr valve? Some of the early renix had these and when they failed would cause a vacumm leak /high idle.
and yes try another meter!
Good luck!

Yeah, sounds lika a vacuum leak somewhere. If you get a spray bottle and squirt it around the different areas of the intake, throttle body ect. You will hear a momentary change in idle when you soak the trouble spot. Also listen for the vacuum leaks "hissing".

It does have an egr and I have tested everything with the egr system. Every vacuum line, including all the way down to the top of the gas tank has been replaced. I've darn near ripped the jeep apart :-)

Follow your instincts on the voltage issue. Have you checked the sensor grounds as outlined in the beginning of the TPS instructions?

I did, but I really think that my Voltmeter took a turn for the grave. Unless my Jeeps battery is able to maintain a 15 volt charge after two hours. I'm going to buy a new meter tomorrow after work and continue where I left off. I wonder what could set a relatively new volt meter off like that. When I did test the ground however, it said I had 27.8 OHMS. That's a really big number. Again, that can't be right.

Mine happens to have a vacuum leak at the exhaust manifold. I found it just as described above! I tightened up the exhaust bolts near the back of the engine and it fixed the problem!

Always a good idea to snug up your intake and exhaust bolts with the engine cold. Start at teh middle and work towards the ends. Very common for those bolts to loosen up over time. We used to snug the intake bolts at every 30,000 mile service and frequently found them a bit loose.

Holly #&%# CPT what a *****. I'd be livid
Can you try your volt meter on another car? I use the cheap Harbor freight ones. Different functions have quit, but they have not been wrong.
Yea, those manifold bolts and the spray can test....I use starting fluid carefully in short bursts. My intake likes to leak back by #6.
Also,in another thread, I think it was cruiser mentioned that the EGR can fail to seat and cause a vacuum leak you can't see or hear.****************V CPT-(slakass), his username V

Sorry for the long delay! We've had a busy few days. I'll look into the EGR tonight. The manifold bolts should be tight. I had a shop two months ago replace my clutch. I assume they had to drop the exhaust at least. What's the best way to reach my bottom two bolts? I did get a new volt meter, that works great. Now it's a simple game of adding grounds. Question. Since it's difficult to sand the ground on the dipstick, can I relocate? Also, if I add a ground from the block to the firewall, should I add it from the block to the fuel rail or the firewall to the fuel rail?

I don't want to offend anyone here, but my experience with the "Shop" has not been that good. That smiling face up front receiving your $ often is not the same person who is scrambling under your Jeep, under the gun to get the job done in the allotted time. If they did unbolt your manifolds do you think they installed a new gasket, doing a clutch job? Also on mine some of those bolts are supper tough to get at.
A can of Quick start is $3 +-, the test only takes a couple minutes, and it sounds like you may have a vacuum leak. Best of luck to you, man, what a hassle!
