Ive had this 89 xj for a week now and i am slowly working out all the issues to get it road worthy.
One of the issues is it idles a bit high, and when i put it in drive or reverse and start to go ( with out gas) it feels as if it wants to stall and sometimes it does if i dont give it gas.
I get the same thing when I am coming to a stop.
Previous owner replaced all vacuum lines/ harness, and said he cleaned the TB.
so where should i look first ? MAP, TPS...

And the area where it seats inside the throttle body.
Be careful not to damage the pintle.
Usually I check a MAP by pulling the vac line off of it. If the motor dies, it should be gtg.

My high idle was stupid PO adjusting the butterfly valve, trying to compensate for ivac going bad. Chased this problem for almost 2 years lol.
Had a guy fix this issue in 10 mins, that 4 shops COULDN'T in 2 years.

I removed the air hose from the TB to look at things. the TB was exceptionally clean. and looked like it wasn't adjust by PO, i didn't have time to clean anything yesterday, but when i put it back together, I hit some vacuum lines and i made sure I went over them and checked they were properly connected including the MAP sensor vacuum line. when i started it it idled right around 8-900 RPM and it did not hesitate or feel like stalling when i pulled out of the drive way and back in.
what is normal idle on those?
it sucks that i did a bunch of things at once , now idk what fixed it. ( if it is fixed)

update. it is not fixed. I noticed that the stalling or hesitation/choking doesn't happen when i stop, instead it happens after i start to accelerate from a complete stop. has anyone had this issue?

I had the same issue. Cleaned throttle body, adjusted TPS, bought new TPS, readjusted it, adjusted butterfly, new IAC, tested Sensors, refreshed grounds... did the works.... Turns out it was my EGR valve. Although the EGR valve looked good when I did Cruisers test seemed it was still faulty (could have been gunked up wrong or I might not have followed the test correctly).
Edit: Does it also want to stall or ocassionaly stalls when making a turn?
