If high resistance is found in Tip 5, every sensor will have poor inputs to the ECM.

I got on of the scanners, SnapOn MT2000 found me all sorts of problems on my xj

also run an intake vacuum test for engine health.

my Renix had a huge problem, becuase the egr valve seat broke so that egr was always on this caused a horroble mixture do to poor engine vacuum.

 

Grounds are good. Skipped 2 for now being a 90. Got into the connectors and found that the relay on the driver side by the wipers look fried in the bottom. So I cleaned it up as much as possible and made sure wires weren’t melted together. And I pulled the coil and noted the icm connection points were blue so I took it out and cleaned it and reinstalled. About to go on a test drive and see what progress has been made.

 

Ran great with a lower idle. But still sputtered and stumbled on acceleration. I will continue checking connectors and move down the list. Thank you.

By chance do you know where the timing is supposed to be? I believe I read 12 when I hit it with the timing light.

 

It's not adjustable. Have you completed Tip 13?

I apologize I am slower these days. I haven’t made it through the first five steps yet. I was curious about timing because when I initially purchased this Jeep it barely made it home. I installed the cloyes double roller set up and installed it exactly the way I removed the previous one. I’m afraid it was initially on the wrong tooth. The Jeep is running great now after the few steps I have completed, but it sputters and stumbles when I accelerate. I apologize in advance, my head injury increases my challenges. Hey man, it's all good!! Never hurts to complete the Tips. ALL of them. Then check the distributor indexing.

 

Yep, I'm working my way through the tips. Slowly, as well.

 

Wow the difference after completing step #3, 90% of symptoms went away. Still making my way through the list. Thank you guys for all of your help.

Will cleaning the icm suffice, or should I replace it? I found one for $36 on rock auto. And I apologize to back pedal on you, but by chance do you know what your timing says when you put a light on it? I want to make sure I’m not off by a tooth.

What's most important is the indexing. Tip 13.
I might clean the ICM. They rarely fail.

 

where are you probing with the red wire? Needs to be on the ground wire of any or all the sensors on that circuit.
