How do I remover the airbag from my steering wheel?

How do I remove the plastic covering from my steering column? I noticed a brass bolt on the top, does that get removed?

You have a 96? That has the mechanical (non-electronic) airbag. There is a special procedure to disarm and remove that airbag which I unfortunately do not remember. Hopefully someone else will.
You can't disarm it by pulling a fuse or disconnecting the battery, it isn't electric. Be careful.

If I were you, I would take it to a qualified technician.

If it goes off while you are screwing around with it, it can kill you.

It's really not hard or that dangerous removing air bags. Yes I still cringe doing it, but if you take the necessary precautions you won't have anything to worry about.

You loosen the bolt on the top of the steering wheel (it is under a round plastic cover) until it stops, the manual says you are supposed to stand out side of the vehicle and reach through the open window to loosen this bolt (and tighten it again when re-arming the air-bag) just in case it goes off. Disconnecting the battery first is also recommended.
