My Cherokee didn't come with the tow package and I'd like to install one. I've priced the parts and feel comfortable installing the hitch but know nothing about the electrical side, is it difficult to wire the trailer light kit or do I need to pay to have it done?

They makes kits available and you just splice the wire on the pigtail to the corresponding wire for the light you need. A flat 4 connector should be fine unless you want to get a brake controller but then I think you are trying to haul too much and need to see help installing the wiring. With the flat 4 connector you have 1 wire for brake lights, 2 wire for blinkers, and 1 wire for back up.

The electrics will take you about 15 mins with one of the splice kits. The hitch itself however, will take you all day.....don't underestimate what a pig of a job it might well be. Good luck.

just got my hitch installed today, took about 2-3 hours between my buddy and I. I'm researching how to hook up the electrical as well.
I certainly do not want to thread jack, is there electrical already run to somewhere to split the 4 pin connector too? On my Blazer there was wiring taped straight to the bumper to splice into, I didn't see anything like that today.
I hope we do not have to splice into the brake light system ourself

This unit makes it plug-n-play. The wire plugs are behind the spare tire behind the plastic panel.

I used to do this for a living, can't remember if all cherokees had amber turn signals but those that do are called a 5 wire system, 1. running lights, 2. left turn, 3. right turn, 4. brake light, 5. ground. In order to connect this to a flat 4 plug (1. running lights, 2. L turn/brake, 3. R turn/brake, 4. Ground) you need a converter. On vehicles without amber turn signals the brake and turn signal use the same filament in the light bulb. I would recommend the kit that was posted, makes it so much easier. Coach
