Default Rear Main Seal Replacement

Just wondering if it's possible to replace Rear Main seal & Oil Pan gasket with just placing jeep up on jack stands ?? If I remove tires and Jeep is up on stands will that be enough to wiggle oil pan out to replace gasket ?
I saw one video and they removed front axle . Don't want to go there !!

If anyone has done job , is it very difficult ???

I did my rear main seal on my 99 Sport. I jacked it up and put it on jack stands under the body so that the axle drops as far as possible. Didn't even remove my tires.

There is a video on You Tube show exactly how to do this. I just followed that and no more oil leak.

Just a heads up. Oil leaking from the oil filter adapter O rings blows back looks just like a bad RM seal. It's common for those O rings to harden and leak. See>.

OIL FILTER ADAPRER O RINGS http://www.myjeepxj.com/cherokee-rep...filter-adapter And a link with torx.. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/oi...o-ring-127359/

The more room you can get between the axle the oil pan the easier it will be to remove it. Consider disconnecting the the swaybar and shocks to gain a little extra clearance.

I would recommend reading the above links and working from top down.

Try the first two (valve cover and filter adapter) then wait and see if it still leaks. Then consider doing the pan and RMS.

I think my newest Jeep...the po had the RM changed, they boogered it up, then sold to me. Now with the adapter fixed all I need to do is go back and fix what they did to toe RM.

X2 on undoing the shocks, Seen that posted plenty...

Replaced mine on my stock 89 a few months back. It was bad, not an upper engine leak as said above. Tho they are more common. I tried removing the pan without dropping the axle, just wasn't gunna happen. I just zipped off the nuts atop the shocks and the axle side of the trac bar and jacked up the jeep, axle stayed low enough to pull the pan. May have to disconnect the sway bar on some but my bushings are shot so they gave enough to drop.

Every time I read this forum I find another thing or two that I need to do. It's a great resource for sure. I'm seeing about a teaspoon or two every few days dripping from the rear of the pan. I guess I should start at the top as suggested. Thanks folks.

Yep. I just bought a Comanche that was gushing oil. Distributor gasket. Slapped an O-ring in it's place and it's dry as a bone.

I'd be looking up ABOVE first, and VERIFYING the source of the oil leak YOURSELF.

Everybody, who doesn't own or have to pay for or perform your vehicle repairs, loves to poke their noggin UNDER the Jeep and come out bearing the false bad news that your RMS is leaking.

Many mechanics, friends, people on Jeep forums who can’t see your Jeep from where they’re at, and good old Uncle Bob seem to enjoy telling you it’s the rear main seal. Has a catastrophic ring to it, doesn’t it?

A simple leak at the back of the valve cover or other source could produce the same symptoms. You don’t need to be a mechanic to figure this out. If you have good eyesight and a dim flashlight, you’re good to go on your own. Don't jump on the RMS/oil pan gasket bandwagon right off the bat.

Almost any oil leak on your 4.0 is gonna drip from the RMS area for two simple reasons.

First off, the engine sits nose-up and any oil will run back to the RMS area. Secondly, the RMS area is also the lowest point on the engine. Simple physics and the old plumber's adage apply here. "$hit flows downhill".

Valve cover gasket, oil pressure sending unit, oil filter adapter seals and distributor gasket, in that order, have to be eliminated as possibilities first.
