You dont like dripping oil? Thats one of the first questions you have to answer yes to in the "before you can own a XJ" manual. lol
They dont run without oil leaks. but good luck w/ that job, ive done on other vehicles but never an XJ or 4x4 at that. The only thing i can say is, if you dont have a lift, make sure you have pleany of jacks!

This doesn't pertain to actually R/R'ing the seal, but in my efforts to cure sealing issues causing some mild smoking when it gets hot, I've added a 6cyl can of Engine Restore and unexpectedly noticed that the back of my oil pan stays ALOT dryer.
Granted I would only leave a dime sized spot if I let it sit for 4 or so days, but when doing some suspension work I noticed the back of the pan to be mysteriously dry(er). And yes, it still had oil in the pan.

just follow the write up in that link .........i printed off a copy and had it out in the shed with me..motor stays where it is ... hardest thing is getting pan out , should be a bit easier on yours as you have a 4.5 lift ......
good luck and keep us posted

You guys have the right idea. Only have an issue with oil pan clearance on stock ride height jeeps. Only the V6's had 1 peice seals which required tranny removal and a special seal removal tool, inline 6's have 2 peice and are straight foward as you have mentioned. Good luck.

Thats a great write up! Awesome how these are designed to not have to separate the tranny from the back of the engine too. The only time I replaced a rear main seal was when I did a 5 speed swap in my 240SX so the tranny was off anyways and I had a lift to do it with. woulda been a total PITA to not have a lift.

I have my jeep apart oil pan no problem main cap no problem. I am trying to punch out the upper main seal with no luck. I am not getting to aggressive with it as I a worried about marking the shaft. The seal that sits in in the main cap was hard as rock a bi**h to get out but since it is out of the engine I cold dig at it.
Any suggestions for me.
