Oil pump you mean? No, it's not an absolute necessity, I just did since I was already in there and was sitting at 175K miles. It's a mechanical pump and really isn't much that can go wrong with it (from what I understand, but could be wrong ).

Nah, nothing you can really do with it. Just make sure the screen on the pickup tube isn't filled with gunk and you're good to go. I said in my previous post that there isn't really anything that can go wrong with it and that's not exactly true, they do wear out eventually, but I think most of that would be due to neglecting oil changes.

And you're certainly welcome, God knows how much I've leaned on forums for help since moving off to college in '98. I had basic tools, I had basic manuals, but sometimes you just need someone with some experience to help out! My wife used to bug me about being so active in different vehicle forums even when we didn't have a problem, but now she understands that I'm fairly competent because I read a lot and I've saved a ton of money that we couldn't have afforded to spend on mechanics.

Maybe past it now, ive done a few of these and to much droop can be an issue. the cherokee i have now has a 6.5 lift on it and it was the hardest pan to get off. my wj with 4 inches it fell out. I use a small flat screwdriver to start the old seal, u got to hit the metal center of it anyway. Once out of the other side, i take a dry blue terry wipe and press it on the seal and slide it right around, the dry towel gets a good grip on it. going back i oil it up good and use another dry shop towel to get a grap of it. lay it flat on the crank where it goes and just spin it into place.
Hope u get it

Nope. Not yet. Still need to get the upper seal out on throw the new ones in! Try to get a time where I can steadily work on it and when I'm not dead beat tired! Doesn't happen to often...

I've only had one oil pump fail.
It was a 351M Ford, and it locked tight and sheared the roll pin in the distributor and killed the engine with no damage.

Its easy enough to open the pump and use a feeler gauge and make sure the clearances are in check, and there is no excessive wear on the bottom plate.

Then fill it with vaseline when you put it back together that way its primed and will start pumping instantly. The Vaseline will dissolve in the heat of the engine and mix with the oil with no issues.
