Just purchased a 2wd 01 Jeep Cherokee and now this clunking noise comes from the rear end. Video posted is the noise, any help would be appreciated, thank you.

 

I do not see the video.

Does it happen when you're braking? I had a pretty bad rhythmic clunk that came from the rear when I braked. I replaced the drums and the noise went away.

 

added the video and whenever I press the breaks it slows down the knocking

 

I'm going to assume the knocking slows down because the vehicle is slowing down.

Does it feel like something is shifting around when you accelerate or slow down?

 

Another thing you can do is jack up one or both sides of the rear end (make sure to chalk off the front end) and put the Jeep in neutral. Wiggle the driveshaft and see if it moves. If it does, your u-joint is probably toast. If the driveshaft is okay, try rotating the tires and see if the differential makes any noise. If it does, see if it has any fluid in it.


(Also, since you just got this thing, go ahead and change all the fluids.)

 

get underneath and check that nothing is very close to the driveshaft, such as exhaust.

take the rear wheels and brake drums off, see if anything is astray

if that does not locate the issue, next I would safely lift the rear end, and with an assistant to rev motor, make careful examination
