No doubt the '96 would look different, starting in '97 the elctrical systems started to develop to what is seen in the '98 and up. There are differences in the '97 to the '98, and a few differences in the '98 to the '99, but not many. Starting in '00 the German engineers got their fingers in the works (after the Daimler take over) and changed (refined? LOL) a few systems.
I am happy to report I fixed the problem. What a mess!! Two of the harnesses were completely corroded. A few wires were broken off and a bunch more broke when I grabbed the harness. Also, both grounds near by didn't look to great so I cleaned them up real good. It took a few hours to clean up the wires and get everything soldered up. I don't realize but the third brake light wasn't working either. That has due to the other harness. Thanks to all you guys for the help. The pics and wiring diagrams sure helped.

Where were the cobbled up harnesses located?
