Those tags are on both the front and rear...It's the ID so to speak..There is a chart somewhere with a list of numbers that will tell you exactly what gears are in it, if it has Limited slip or not and what not..Although the gear ratio should be on the tag as well..

The 8.25 has a flat surface on the bottom, such as the one pictured above. Tha D35 is an semetric oval, as the one pictured. The D44 is shaped more like a weird D (it is not even close to the others) and it will have a metal screw type drain plug. On the upper right hand side of the housing of a D35 on the webbing from the housing to the axle tube there is a casting that will say 35 or 35C. The tags you are referring to will tell you the ratio that is in your axle. Hope this helps!!

Yeah I have a line on a 8.25 for my jeep from a 98 xj...Means the 29 spline and almost the same size as the D44 and much beefier then the D35's...I found one with 3.55's for $150 and if I can snag it this weekend I am ...Then I can have it re-geared and have this other D30 re-geared at the same time and go 4.10's all the way around..

What did Chryco do to finish it? Paint and polish or did they do something internal? Does anyone know?

The other series of numbers should tell you the gearing. If i remember correctly, my tj had this tag on the rear axle and the last 3 numbers were 373, which was my gearing. MY xj doesn't have any tags.
