Probably added what they wanted that particular vehicle to have, such as limited slip or regular open gears.

So you think it came from Dana w/o any gears or axles in it? But the non C designated axles came ready to install straight from Dana. Was there any "custom" D 30s or was this limited to rear axles?

No custom D30s as far as I know. The 35 came in base-line XJs, as well as several other configurations excluding tow-equipped XJs. For example, 4-cyl. automatics had different gear ratios than 4-cylinder manuals, and the same goes for the 4.0L XJs. Federal models, police models, and several other variations also existed. It was more cost effective for Chrysler to mass order empty axle housings and install the necessary gears and shafts on their own assembly lines, headed straight for installation into that particular XJ model.

Some (most) have a different fill plug than Stryker's does so don't use that fill plug as an identifier.

The 8.25 is much stronger than the weak 35, but not quite as strong as a 44. The biggest drawback (IMO) to the 8.25 is the limited selection of ring & pinion gears. 4.56 is the limit.
