Is there a easy way to see what kind of rear axle I have on my 96 XJ Country?

Look in the Axle info thread in the sticky section. My guess would be you have a Chrysler 8.25. I have 96 country and that's what I have.

Hmmm...I'll check the search thread again.. couldn't find much the first time. Evidently there isn't a way to determine from the outside of the case? I heard there was a way to submit the vin at some website and you can get a build sheet of your vehicle?

Yes you can have your build sheet back in about 15-30 min. I recently sent to mine and surprised at some of the options it had. For one keyless entry when I bought mine all I got was a key, so I bought a fob on eBay and went to Jeep and had them program it that is something I have on everything and I missed it on my XJ. The sheet will tell you every single item that it left the factory with and add-ons till it was delivered mine went into service on 07/31/1999.

I also will tell you if you ask if any recalls were made that haven't been done on your Jeep. On my WJ there was one that needed to be done both front seat heaters seat/back needed to be replaced under warranty. Well worth the minute of two it took to fill out the information needed for sure, again the link some here posted it.

Hell this is better than any manual

Right HERE.
Tell them you want a build sheet, and give them your vin.
