ive got a 1996 xj with the 8.25 rear and i ordered the lock rite for the rear 27 spline this is the factory axle not replaced ever and went to put the locker in didnt fit counted the splines theres 29 di some of the 96s come out with 29 splines just wondering sent the locker back today hopefully the other one comes soon

 

no idea, mines a 96 with 8.25 I'll check next time I change the oil (probably pretty soon, its leaking pretty bad, needs to be resealed). You've got me crossing my fingers for 29 splines now.

 

yes, mine is a 96 with the 8.25 and i have a 29 spline too i dont think they were all made with 29 spline but i know some were.

 

1996 was the split between the two. Early model year had the 27 spline and later model year had the 29 spline.

 

Now you guys got me crossing my fingers too. I didn't know they made lockers for the 27 spline axels, and didn't know some of the 96 8.25 were 29 splines, therefore never even thought about ordering one. Hmmm... maybe I can now....

 

well good for me something everyone should look at before ordering a locker on a 96 like i did thanx for the responses

 

is there a way to tell by the VIN#? do you know when in 96 they switched to 29 splines?

 

Not that I am aware of. You may be able to guess if you have a build date though.

 

I don't think there's a 29 spline 8.25 lockright. You'd have to get an Aussie locker. Same thing, but prettier.
