I have a Chyco 8.25 on my 2000 XJ...is it worth going to a Dana 44 for just some roading? Also, is a 44 a 44 is a 44 or are their certain ones that would adapt to my XJ easier then others.

The 8.25 in your 2000 is strong enough for what your needs are. The 97-01 8.25s have larger axle shafts than the earlier models and are 29 spline compared to the earlier 27 spline shafts. The only thing you will gain by switching to a D44 is a lighter wallet from spending money you should save.
Use that cash for more beneficial upgrades.

X 2, If you already have a Chryco 8.25 the gains you would get from a D44 aren't worth the money or the a$$ pain.
If you're sold on getting a D44, try to find an 87 XJ that has the OEM D44. It's a direct bolt in to any other XJ so long as you have the same gearing.
I swapped my Chryco 8.25 out of my 91 XJ for an 87 XJ D44 just because I got a killer deal on it and I was ignorant back in the day and I thought my 8.25 was D-Turdy-Five.

Actually Buck, your swap was worth the effort. The D35 shafts are 1.18 in diameter and the early 8.25s are 1.17. The only strength advantage you originally had over a D35 is the axle housing itself.

Well, that was why I said had I not been a Newbie to XJs and I had realized I had a 8.25 rather than thinking I had a D35, I never would have went looking for the D44.

Unless I found a killer deal on one I wouldnt do that swap.
If I was going to swap the rearends to make it worth while find a 96 up explorer 8.8 with disc brakes... like below
