Going Doorless?
Summer is coming around and I am thinking about going doorless with my 98 XJ. I saw a write up about going doorless and it said you had to do all this stuff to the hinges to get the off and then the doors would never really be properly aligned after that.
I was wondering if you could just take the door off the hinges, and leave the hinges attached to the frame? It seems like this would be a much simpler alternative. Has anyone done this or knows if it can be done, and if the doors will align properly after?
Thanks for the help everyone

the only problem i see with your method is putting them back on, i work for a dealership that has a body shop and some of the guys spend the better part of the day lining up doors
if you do it then drill a hole through the hinge and body then when putting it back together use the drill bit to line it up correctly

You could easily put a in set of quick disco plugs for your power locks and windows. I put a set of 5.25 speakers in my kick panels. Some buy aftermarket kick panels with speaker provisions but I just removed my stock ones, dremeled a hole. Dropped the speakers in, and put it all back together. If you decide to go that route just watch your speaker placement in the panel. On my Xj I had a nub coming off the metal structure that I had to grind off after the fact to get the panel to sit properly. I'm unsure if yours has that but if you take some measurements before hand (unlike me ) you could save yourself the extra step. I'm not sure if the oe 5.25's are shallow enough to fit in the kick panels. Mine blew so I left them in the doors and just grabbed a set of pioneer's from wally world. Just my .02.

Your Jeep looks too nice to take the doors off & trash it. Fix the A/C & keep the windows rolled up. That's the way we do it here in Southwest Florida! Mud/dirt/rain outside. Cool & dry inside!

do it its hella fun
pre-96s are alot better for going doorless because they re-allign so easily with the cut hinges. my doors sag and worse on the passengers side. and you have to slam it to shut it without lifting it. thats why i always open and close the door for her like a gentleman...hahaha.

i did this and lovee it, i first just took the doors of the hinges, unscrewing the hex bolts at the angle was a pain in the butt but still do able, i recently cut the hinges and remounted/alligned the hinges and doors so that i can take them on and off easily, its totally worth all the work

Probably the same thing that would happen with a door on you would get in a accident? A friend of mine and I will be making tube doors for XJ's soon and they will be very fairly priced! Keep a look out for Mad Horse offroad systems
