My 4x4 lever/shifter on my cherokee makes a rattling sound only when I'm in Drive and have my foot on the brake at a full stop. Could it be loose? Not sure.

Welcome to the club... VERY common problem in about all XJ's. Mine does it, and the one in my dads does it. I just jeep pushing it down and it stops, but some day I WILL find a permanent cure for it, it drives me farking NUTS!!!!

maybe check your motor/tranny mounts. I had a bad bushing on a trans mount when I idle but when i replaced it the noise went away.

Mine is absolutely, positively, my shift lever. If idling at a light it sounds like a rattle/knock. When I barely push down or pull up on my lever it stops immediately.

just take some electrical tape, wrap it around the contact part of the handle 4 or 5 times, problem solved!

Just picked up the fix from the dealer. Note sure what the part number is right now. It was $20. It is a new bushing and a few extra other parts. The parts department knew about it. There was a service bulletin on this issue back in the day. I hope to install it tomorrow morning. One of the techs at the dealer told me it was a fairly easy job. I looked under the rig and it does look pretty easy.

I bought the parts for the TSB this week and took care of it today...I couldn't take the rattling anymore. Took a good hour and a half start to finish, but it's done and the rattling is GONE!!
