Default Rattle while coasting

Hey guys, I looked around a bit but couldnt find any info. In my endless search to get rid of all the random noises my Jeep makes Im curious what could be causing this. If I am driving say 30 mph and I let off the gas and coast I can hear a rotational sounding rattle coming from under the Jeep. Ive already replaced my ujoints and it was doing it with and without the front driveshaft in(right now its out to upgrade ujoints/carden joint). My guess is either something in the diff or the rear brakes. There isnt any side to side play in the driveshaft or yoke, but I still havent been in to change the fluid and look at the gears. Ill be doing that probably early next month. I have no idea if the rear brakes have ever even been touched. I just got the Jeep in Feb. so yea...hah. Any ideas before I start spending more money searching?

This may be too random but push down on the transfer case handle. See if that helps. My TC handle loves to rattle a quick slap will stop that.

Could be the converter heat shield or the exhaust hitting something while not under load. Can you get it to duplicate the noise while sitting still by changing the RPMs of the engine?
Is it a manual or an auto?

Nope, once in a while there is a rattle in the back when at idle, but its a different sounding rattle. Other than that it doesnt really matter if I give it gas or not, usually its pretty quiet. Just not when coasting down the road lol.

I had a very similar problem, same type of noise. While coasting down the road slightly press on the brake pedal...if the noise stops your brake pads are loose, or the caliper itself is loose. In my case this is what was making the rattling noise.

Ill check the strap and see how that is. Ill also look at the brakes. If it is them, it has to be the rear. I just did all new brakes up front with rotors/pads and know they're nice and snug. Wish I had a better knowledge of drum brakes. Anyone know whatd it cost to have them replaced with new everything? They probably havent been touched in the 160000 mile life of the jeep...heh

yeah, i heard a similar sound in mine recently. i thought it was the u joints, then thought it was the brakes.

turns out as i was checking out the rear brakes, i see that the exhaust pipe has been rubbing on the leaf springs, and that it had come unmounted.

so check your exhaust maybe. it was the problem for me!

Thanks, I just took a look at it. I think I might do those on my own, doesnt seem too hard actually. I'll have to research how to adjust them, but that doesnt seem bad. Doesnt look like its worth $200, thats for sure.

Well, if your exhaust is rusted to hell you could easily have some loose metal parts inside the muffler...
