I found this random plug in the top left of my engine bay and have no idea what its supposed to connect to. its a 1999 xj. let me know if you know where it goes or can check where it goes.

 

Looks like it goes to the underhood light.

But chances are that connector is live and there could be.

 

That's definitely the connector for the underhood light. Someone obviously removed the light itself, but that's what it is for. I had to remove mine because it was causing a parasitic draw on my battery. So my wire is just zip tied to the rest of the harness. One of these days, I might actually try and track down the reason for the draw. The light itself was brand new.

That connector seems to exist whether you had the underhood light or not.

 

Its cheaper to make one harness with all the plugs then to make 20 different versions of the harness with various features removed.
