Throttle position sensor. When i deployed a few years back, my xj sat for 5 months. When i got back i was driving it and it just cut out for no reason. Since then I've had issues with both my 99 xj's and their TPS sensors. There's two options, get a BWD replacement from a parts store with a warrenty, they typically last about a year. when it goes bad just go to the parts store and swap it out. Or, go to a junkyard and pull an OEM factory one which tend to last longer. Either way if i was having the problem you are having i would replace the TPS because I've had numerous issues that all have been related to a bad TPS, sometimes it throws a code, sometimes it doesn't. Other times it will momentarily throw a code and look like it clears but when you hook up a reader it still shows up.

Even though your CEL didn't come on I would still have it check for ant stored codes. Hopefully it can point you in some kind of direction to go before you start throwing parts at it. It can get pretty pricy doing that.

Crank position sensor. Before I changed mine it would cut out on the interstate and turn itself back on. At red lights it would cut off and it would start back up immediately. After it got very bad I had to wait a few minutes to start back up. No cel.

Ive had the same "cut out" and jerk for 3 years. Some days does it several times per minute, then it totally goes away, then it is back.
Ive tuned the tps and when I play with the revs at park all is good. the Peep does it most at about 90kmph about 55mph. Happens to me rain or shine.
Ive changed all the plugs and wires, rotor, cap, cleaned all grounds, coil contacts clean, no coil cracks. Starts all weather.
My 89 has no codes to throw, and all components and Renix injection is original with over 624000km. Today, pouring rain, 4 hrs driving, not a hickup.
Who is to say what tomorrow will bring. Very annoying not being able to trace the source. I am convinced it is electrical and I suspect the converter lockup is blipping, but not truly sure. I understand your concerns and am also looking for the cause and cure. However as I say about 3 years with the symptom at about 70000 km yearly and no related breakdowns. Certainly open to suggestions.

get the codes checked. your local auto parts store will do it for free. you could have a few different issues and you need a clue to narrow it down. otherwise you'll be throwing parts at symptoms and it will cost you more in the long run, just like turbo said.
My jeep was doing the same thing. Check your neutral safety switch(PRNDL). There are write-ups here for SAFE removal and rebuilding. If you cant rebuild it I will try and find the link to the page where I got mine for like 1/6th the price of Autozone and Advance.
Check to see that you routed the cps wire correctly..... If not the wire can come in contact with the exhaust manifold and melt it... This happened on my 95 xj and when I hit bumps wheeling it would just die on me due to it shorting out on the firewall or manifold....
