Yes it will work, and is actually a huge upgrade being an open style radiator vs. your closed system. Make sure to get the overflow bottle as well. Very common upgrade for 87-90' Renix owners. Did mine last year and couldn't be happier.

Wish I'd gone the same route with my 90 when I replaced my rad a few years ago. Take a look at the cover piece that goes over the radiator. The 91 might have a cut-out for the filler tube. As said, definitely get the bottle as well.

unless that radiator is metal nthree core you can get a new one for cheaper,do not stay with the closed system upgrade to the open system 91 and up

If you do get a new one, I'd recommend radiator barn, awesome guys, ordered mine Tuesday, it came in Friday. And it might be worth getting a new all metal one, this is the second radiator I've had to buy, others were plastic, now I switched... $163.55 for my brand new all metal two row CSF radiator. And that includes the shipping.

Need a new rad cap for the new rad. Aren't there some heater hose plumbing/routing changes necessary along with the old pressure bottle being eliminated? Open style bottle must have the hose running from bottom to the nipple below the rad cap and bottle must have a vented cap (no pressure in bottle).

The 87-90's had a "closed cooling system", basically no radiator cap. The pressure bottle, or overflow bottle was plagued with issues, a small crack in it due to pressure buildup would compromise your systems entire cooling ability. With an open style, you have a radiator cap, which acts like a fail safe in the event of overheating. Plus, it's direct feed into the radiator. Like I said, I swapped mine out with a junkyard one out of a 94, got the coolant overflow bottle and everything for $38. My XJ used to get past redline in less then 15 minutes, now after a full day of wheeling it barely makes it to 210*F.
