Wierd smell? could you be a little more descriptive? Rotten eggs? burnt plastic? sulfer?
As for the long cranks, it's normal for jeeps to take a second or two cranking before there's enough fuel pressure in the rail. How long is it taking?

well its cranking for a good 5-9 secs. i have already replaced the fuel pump but it hasnt fixed the cranking. as for the smell its kinda sweet, i would say... could it be anti-freeze or coolant?
long crank is normal for a renix. Should be ~10 seconds or less. It has a couple more things it has to search for before it fires, unlike HOs.
Here are my old 89, and my new 89:
Turn the key to "run" and let the fuel pump run, wait 5 seconds. Then start it.
You should do this with any vehicle, but it really helps with jeeps.

Poor/low CPS output voltage can cause even longer crank times in a Renix than is normal. Got a voltmeter with a scale for AC volts? It's easy to test.
