Yes, you can replace your gauge cluster with with one that has full instrumentation.
Your Jeep being a 96 has an electrical speedometer vs the earlier cable driven one. If you stay between the years of 91? and 96 you'll be sure to have the correct cluster.
Then you'll need to hit the parts store and get the oil pressure and water temp sending units for a gauge... not the indicator (or idiot light) unit. Guess you can try the sending units from the junkyard if they work..
Search full gauge cluster and you should find more threads on this.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the tachometer (rpm) gets it's signal from the CPS. In most cars, where the tach is omitted, there's still a plug for it from the factory. I'd check there first, before looking for a gauge. If you can find it, just go to the j/y and get a tach from a same model/year Jeep with a manual trans. HTH.

you could get an aftermarket one like i did. it operates just like the normal gauge cluster as far as lighting goes(dimming and operated by the switch) sorry for the crappy picture, bright day outside, tinted windows=dark inside
Overland had it right, just not your year. In 1991, Jeep started using electronic speedo cables. You need to get a gauge cluster from a 1990 or older. Remember that the odometer goes with the cluster, so make sure you do whatever it takes to be legal (have a shop adjust the odo). If you're at the JY, you might as well pull the temperature sending unit and the oil pressure sending unit so that the gauges read correctly. Otherwise, you'll be paying for them at your local parts jockey. All of the gauges will work for you when you install the correct sending units. The tach will work.

ill have to change the sending units for the different cluster even tho my current cluster has gauges. the sending units are different?
I've never seen a cluster with gauges and no tach. If you've already got needle type gauges, I'd imagine you wouldn't need the sending units. Just grab a cluster with the tach and you should be set. Remember to use a 90 and older. I'm not sure about the HO non HO distinction, but it looks like you've already gotten good advice about that.
