Question on 0331 head
I have a 2000 XJ. It was a victim of the cylinder head failure with the previous owner. I was looking at the service records that came with the vehicle, and looking at the head itself. All I see is "remanufactured head" on the work order, and the head itself. How do I know if this was a reinforced head? Also, what is the best thing I can do to reduce the risk of running into this issue a 2nd time? Or is that not even a concern with a remanufactured head?

There is alot of info on here about this... having gone through it myself.. look for it to have a stamp under the valve cover that says tupy. as for trying not to have it happen again do not overheat it keep your cooling system in tip top shape

Good luck on your quest. 0331 TUPY is the revision after 2002 that doesn't have this problem. If you just see 0331 it's an original. if you see another number then it's a previous generation head and your coil rail is probably creatively attached
As for searching, the function on this site is worthless. Add "site:cherokeeforum.com" and use Google instead - MUCH better results!

My 2000 is at the shop right now if the head is in fact cracked I think I'm gonna shell out the money for a quality head after reading through countless threads I feel like its a good idea

- If it cracks, you'll see it here.
- If it's been welded, you'll see it here.
- If it's a revised head, you will see a TUPY foundry mark here.
Not bad for pulling a cap and looking down a two-inch hole!

If the head was replaced by the dealer it would be a replacement 0331 head. Even most indep shops will most likely get a reman 0331 head unless you specifically tell them to order from Clearwater.

Even if you buy a re-manufactured engine there is a 50/50 chance it will have a 0331 head. Evidently the major engine re-builders are not too concerned. The odds are they will have a non TUPPY head since most of the trade-in cores are pre tuppy.

Well I looked under the fill cap and was please to see TUPY looking right back at me. That's a relief. The repair was done in 2011, so maybe by that time they were more than aware of the issue and only ordered the TUPY ones? Who knows, just glad I have one.
